World Boxing Champion...Hanna Gabriels



Our Cousin, Hanna fought in Managua, Nicaragua at the National Stadium on December 19th 2009 and won the World Boxing Championship in the 147 lbs. division!

I was lucky enough to have been a witness to the tremendous growth achieved due to Hanna's extraordinary work ethic, focus and dedication. Forever smiling as if she has a secret in her back pocket yet that secret is so visible it is blinding. A secret that in her left hand she carried the power of her family behind her and in her left hand her strong faith in God. Her feet are always well planted in reality and gives all of her to the ones she comes in contact with.

I could write to you about the details of her being light on her feet due to an agonizing 6-8 hour daily workout and special diet. I could mention segmentized strength training... left jab, upper cuts and on and on...yet what I remember most is how she captivated the attention of the kids.

She would stop warming up to give the attention to any child that was present. Took a break to answer all of their questions and is passionate more so in finding a way to encourage the youth. Life has been a financial struggle and athletics is what pulled her and her family through. Her parents kept the kids busy in order for them to maintain the correct path. She believes that through athletics and proper role models that society on a whole would benefit.

Today she represents Costa Rica to the world and is faithful that the country will pay attention and that more support will driven towards Costa Rica's athletics. Soccer is the dominate sport but soccer is not for everyone. Financial support needs to be directed to the alternative athletic professionals that are breaking ground consistently world-wide but that are struggling due to third-world economic limitations.

All in all we are very proud of Hanna however she was our Family Champ long before not because of boxing but because of the type of loving, positive, supporting and family driven individual that she is. This World Boxing Federation Belt is simply her announcement to the world that she is here with her arms open to her supporters.

The picture above captures this cousins essence at its purest: her smiling with the family behind her. In the picture you see Olga Gabriels Cyrus, Maritza Cunningham Cyrus, Rebecca Cunningham Cyrus (Nena) and one of her biggest fans the late Tia Julie (Julieta Cunningham Cyrus).

Tia Julies last year of life was spent looking forward to sitting front row at Hanna's boxing matches. Hanna... Tia Julie will always be in your FRONT ROW.
